About this project

Michigan's property tax system shapes how our local governments, especially public schools, are funded, how easily people can move into and around our communities, and who benefits most. It is also genuinely hard to understand.

I built Mind the Cap to help explain how this system works, so we can have a clearer conversation about what changing it might look like, and how to make it more fair and more functional.

About me

I'm Scott Trudeau, and I live in Ann Arbor with my family. I'm the parent of an Ann Arbor Public Schools student, an elected trustee on the Ann Arbor District Library Board, and a former Ann Arbor City Planning Commissioner. By day I'm the CTO of Listings Project, a small, community-oriented, carefully vetted classifieds service for real estate, jobs, and services.

You can find me on my personal blog at sstrudeau.com and on Bluesky at @sstrudeau.

Support this work

I build and maintain Mind the Cap in my free time, and pay Regrid for parcel data and cover hosting costs out of my own pocket. If you find it useful and want to help keep it going, you can buy me a coffee to help support it. Every bit helps. I'm also glad to hear constructive feedback or answer questions.
